Well, I was sad and jealous of the SFWA lounge slapfight that I missed out on. (not, however, sad that my money isn't supporting them)

So I went and read sff.net instead, and found my favorite post yet: ( Well, there was a clicky, but the post it went to has been deleted because it angers some people that I read the internets. Good luck with that.) The jist of it was someone agreeing that Harlan had acted inappropriately. I had said I wasn't going to start a conversation unless she made a big deal about how if she'd been at the Hugos, she would have spoken out, but I can't wait for that post, so I'm starting one anyways.

See, this post is particularly impressive because back in the good old days of Helix slapfights, Doranna defended Sanders when Kat pointed out that he was using unnecessarily foul language. Defended him using, if I remember correctly, the same basic arguments that the Harlan Apolgists just used.

Now, maybe it's my ridiculously over-PC behavior, or whatever, but I'm missing where the line is--is it that this involved physical contact as opposed to just graphic descriptions? Is it that Kat is unpublished and Connie is a respected professional? Why is this behavior inexcusably bad, even to her, and the other shrugged off as just boys being boys?

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but hello? No wonder we can't get the boys to behave when we can't even get the women all on the same page.

Wow. Now I get to be talked about. Kind of boggles me that anything I say is worth analysis by someone I don't know in a venue I don't frequent. (Yes, a friend brought this to my attention. I know I shouldn't respond--I can't imagine posting anything that can't in some way be misconstrued and probably mocked--but we all have our moments of weakness.)

Truth is, if you'd come directly to me and asked the question you pose in your post, I would have answered as best I could. (I don't mean to say we would have come to an understanding; I just mean that I would have responded honestly, with intent to clarify.) But I don't think you really want to know, or you would have simply asked me instead of making me fodder for your own purposes.

BTW, I don't have the faintest idea what I would have done under those circumstances. I do think that what actually happened--as seen on film--was classy, but should be required of no one.

If you have an answer to my question, please, feel free to give it. I promise that none of my friends will swear at you, even if you are wrong.

Under these circumstances? I think not. There are many ways to convey disrespect, as I have seen here. If answers are what you want, come to me directly the next time (supposing there is one; I'm doubting it as I'm overall just not that interesting).

(In the meantime I'm hitting the road, so I'm done here.)
