A random line in Chance's post yesterday confused me so much because I was trying to figure out what kinda of a world England is that lawyers come and try and get you to change your service providers.

(This is clearly a sign of too much british in my own language, much like my confusion over Bears Discover Fire and the torches thing. Cause seriously, do you know how much more sense Bears Discover Fire makes when you realise they're not carrying flashlights? I could never figure out why the fire was the important thing when they were using flashlights--doesn't electricity trump fire? I couldn't figure out why the light was orange and flickery, but I figured they were bears, they didn't know how to change batteries. Sticks with fire on top, when I figured out that's what he was talking about, was something that had NEVER occurred to me until that moment at Clarion when we were reading the story prior to his arrival. (also, interestingly enough, I'd always really liked the story, and felt like I got it. And in fact, nothing else was changed by the torches misreading, so I think I did get it. I just don't know how I missed that.)

So yesterday i was convinced today was the board meeting, and made mental plans accordingly (woke up before 11:30, thought of things to do while sitting still for 5 hours, things like that). And when i went downstairs just now, for water before I take a shower and face the board meeting, I was puzzled by the total lack of preparation for the meeting--no lunch started, the director out of town, little things like that.

"Huh," I thought. "Maybe today *isn't* the 16th."

My mother used to say of all of us, "It's a good thing they're in gifted class, otherwise they'd be too dumb to tie their own shoes."
