This month, when I am not at work freaking out about deadlines, I am at home freaking out about redoing my cousin's sampler. The top half was unfinished, and I had to lay out the date and names and text. It's all here, in the set

I am gradually converting the lower half of the sampler into 'correct' cross stitch. My grandmother's stitching is awful, which hurts to pull out. She was exquisite. Her projects are amazing. I hate my aunt for stealing my bell pull from me, because it was mine and it is gorgeous, and she did it perfectly. But I digress into my hatred. That's not the point. The point is, my grandmother did beautiful work. Much fancier stuff than I do, and she finished them.

This one is not perfect. I will cut tag this because it is huge. but:

And here's the new bit:
And the refinished sky

I will finish the bit of the sky I am working on, and then I will start on the grass--I am tired of blue at the moment.

This will take me forever.

Okay, so I'm not allowed to buy any more cross-stitch for a while. (My mother does inform me that she sent up most of the stuff I had in the box. I can specifically remember a few that I'm not quite finished with, but I suppose I can wait until Xmas to get them.)

The german tablecloth is a stamped cross stitch, which I'm not so much a fan of (particularly since it is actually printed on even weave, and thus about the easiest thing ever to count.), with instructions only in german (and I think they're amazingly un-useful instructions anyways, not that cross stitch usually needs details, really), and no actual graph telling me what colors to do the flowers and leaves in, so i have to look at the pictures (distant and not very distinct) and guess. So it's being tabled for now. (hee! Tabling the tablecloth!)

I did win both the little birds and the set of 4 little kits, in addition to the three others I have (the orchids, the table cloth, and the swedish table runner.) I think I will start the runner as soon as I get it. In the mean time, I've been working a little more on a small Bucilla cottage kit my mom got me supercheap for Xmas one year. It's the right colors for me--the Bastin ones are driving me crazy with their pastelness--but it's also super complicated, which I appreciate for the finished project, but hate when I'm in the middle of it sometimes. So I'll jump back and forth between them for now, and start the runner when it gets here. I think I will do the orchids seperately (I'm seeing them going up the wall along a staircase in my mind, for which three seperates would be best. So I'll probably need to get new fabric for that or do some serious counting (and if I get new fabric, I may get a slightly different color/sort of fabric, I haven't decided.), and figure out how to adapt the framing border so it works on a single flower, which should be easy. And my mother would like one of the little kits, but I promised nothing until I see them.

I just found an error on the finished product picture on a cross stitch project. Right on the chart though, so mine should be fine. i hope.

Well, except for the outlining, but my mom is very fussy about what gets outlined, so I'm just going to give it to her to handle that part of it. There's a lot of outlining in the plan for it, but most of it seems to be stupid--around the flowers on the house, for example, or the edge of the roof. But there's also some that probably does make sense--the cross-hatching on the window so as to look like it's diamond paned.

Anyways, I'm tired of it, so I'll let my mom figure out that stuff, and in the meantime I started work on a little easy pattern of a cardinal. No pictures of it yet. Maybe I'll remember today. And I still have the rest of the scarf to do, but there is major MAJOR crankiness with the pig, so my mom's revamping that part.

Oh, and I should mention that I've tagged all the rest of the picture posts with cross-stitch as well, so you can see it grow. :)

The right side is now all done but for three pink stitches in the red flowering bush. I also have to fill in the blue cloud-ish thing completely, but other than that and some outlining (haven't decided how much, since the plants are all looking pretty good without the ridiculous amount of outlining the plan calls for.) and I'm officially done with half of it.

Also, I would just like to remind people that Kukla Boogie Moon is still one of my favorite stories ever.

Technically there have been a couple of days working on this, but they were lazy days where I'd just do one or two little things. Yesterday I did a good bit of work, though, so new picture! The walkway is looking a little odd. I'm worried about it. The greens, though, look fine when i don't know which are wrong, and the roof looks good too.
tanaise: (Default)

It looks like I got miles done, but really, it's just that I didn't need to spend large bits of time sorting out exactly where each color goes--it was mostly just 'fill in the empty bit. I bought a 'pale rust' today--you'll notice that it's actually more of a gold color. It looks great on the roof, I'm just a little worried about it on the walk--I matched it against the rust shades, but the walk is mostly terracottas, so we'll have to see if they blend okay. I'm *almost* done with the right side, now. I've just got variations of green left to do. oh, and three stitches of pink. We'll have to see if my wrist feels okay enough tomorrow--it was a little owie as i was sewing, and it always stiffens up overnight.

I bought DVDs today. Nothing I *needed*, but some good stuff--a Labrynith DVD, Equilibrium, and "Stella" which is the new show with Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black (and probably Ken Marino too. He's too pretty for them to leave out.) I also bought a new pillow and cream for dinner and got a couple of library books. I wanted a new comforter cover. My current cover is going down for the third time, but my blanket was so cheap I object to the idea of spending a fortune on something fancy. I may need to figure out if I can get to the Ikea from here.

Dinner was pasta with tomato cream sauce. It turned out perfectly this time. It was also eaten almost instantly by my housemates. They did say very nice things to me about it, at least, though I wouldn't mind if the people who eat a meal I cook maybe thought, 'gosh, I could wash a pan for her, that would make her more likely to do this again." Oh, and this afternoon (between shopping and dinner) I watched V for Vendetta. It was...it was good. I approve of it. Made me cry, a little, but overall, good.

I've messed up another set of colors, but I'm not telling you which ones. :)

I now get a half an hour to rewrite my cover letter, and then I sleep. Tomorrow I need to go through my library books and figure out what order to read them in. I need to go clothing shopping on Saturday--I think H&M and Gap, and if I'm still feeling like doing things, Garment District on Sunday. I may put a note on the fridge about one or both of the trips, to see if anyone wants to go shopping as well.. I loathe shopping by myself. I expect to want very much to be drinking by Saturday evening, but I don't think there are any parties on the horizon.

Happy birthday, those of you who have birthdays today.

ETA: Good news: I apparently saved a copy of the cover letter that went to Thompson on my Bostonworks account. Better news: I got the interview even though I misspelled the name of my current company, and had at least one sentence that changed course midway to the period. So I may yet get it cleaned up enough for tomorrow.

Latest picture:

Slacked off all evening, as usual. It's raining outside my window. I'll go to sleep shortly.

I have, in my emails, a request for me to do a self evaluation as to why I should be allowed to live in the house for another year. It's not so much that they'd kick me out, just a chance for me to think about things I should be doing better with regards to the house. And it's true, there are some. So I'll get to think about that over the next two weeks. bleh. And my freaking cover letter that I still hate. HATE.

Today's work:

Getting there, getting there. I've got most of the right side finished, or mostly finished. The majority of the open spots are yellows now. And I discovered that yes, I misidentified two of the greens (put a yellowish green where a blue-green should be, but as one of my housemates said, "It only matters if other people can tell it's wrong. I've only lost about 5 or 6 squares of width on this side. In theory, that means I've only lost 5 or 6 squares on the other side as well, but my middle may not have been exact, so we'll have to see. I'll probably work my way over along the bottom, and then up and finish the house. But I may yet change my mind, particularly if I get the yellows sorted out.

I discovered yesterday that drinking lowers my inhibitions about impulse buying. I mentioned this to my mother, and said, "I only spent like $30, and there are worst things, like hooking up with inappropriate men." My mother sighed heavily and said, "Yes, but you can't buy grandchildren."

See if I share my fun new games (Talismania) with her anymore.

So there were books (three) and movies (2) yesterday. Today I walked to the library before the board meeting, but didn't actually allow enough time to be at the library, just walking there and walking back, so I ended up a little late for the meeting. Luckily they started with a recap, and I didn't miss anything important. And the meeting itself wasn't nearly as bad as they've been in the past. I also remembered that things like my board membership and the director search committee that I was on have the potential to be useful on my resume (or coverletter), if I write them up properly. I have to read over the job description again tomorrow and figure out how to use them.

And then we went for Japanese hot pot at Shabu-Zen. good food, not bad prices. The shared pot thing can get a little complicated when you're out with vegetarians and people with food allergies, but the waitress we had was excellent. I left before we paid the bill, but I hope they tipped extra, cause she was very nice. I had the lamb again, and a honeydew smoothie, and all the tofu I could coax from the rest of my housemates. I'm currently addicted to Tofu, which probably means I'm not getting enough protein. Next time I go, though, I'm throwing some garlic in the hot pot from the start, since that's what I love best about the dipping sauce (soy sauce = teh yuck)

Oh, so since there was meeting and a movie (just now, after the food), there was also a good bit of needlework.

I think this is day 10? technically, I worked on it a little yesterday while watching Inuyasha, but not much since I was still a little tipsy, and it was just part of the grass, so nothing impressive looking or worth a photo. Today though there was lots done, as I finished the grass and started work on another of the bushes (the blue one). Most of the blank spaces are where i still haven't sorted out the colors--for example, in the new bush, there are supposed to be yellow flowers, but yellow is still unknown. Perhaps I'll remember to take the kit to work this week. I *do* have another meeting tomorrow, but since I'll be clerking, I'll probably not manage to do any work on it there (I don't have dishcrew, at least, for the first sunday in 7 weeks or so, but the downside of that is I forgot the dishcrew I did have last night, and now owe the person who did the whole thing by herself.) But I should have *some* time tomorrow that I'll work on it
tanaise: (monkey)
Day um, 8. (nine days since I started it, but only 8 working on it.)

The green bits on the lower right, that's as far over there that I plan to go, so as to have enough space to stretch the canvas for framing. So today was mostly green stuff--grass and stems and stuff, and a little more purple flowers. Most of the rest of the flowers now in that corner are supposed to be yellow, and I still haven't figured out the differences in the shades, so they're on hold yet. I may need to take a closer look tomorrow, or just throw it in my bag and check the yarn store during lunch for a new skein of each of them.

If only I could animate the pictures, you could watch it grow!

I ripped a nail vacuuming. not quite down to the quick, but definitely close enough. I vacuumed in my room, which I'm hoping will drive off the ants, since they've been hanging around hopefully since someone found a moth carcass the other day. And then I vacuumed the #6 stairs, which since it's summer, dry, and we have new carpet, is pretty close to useless. It's not like the vacuuming made much a difference at all, but it's the thought that counts here. The thought, and the fact that it's my chore. and now I'm going to go brush my teeth and fall asleep.

I finally started reading The Hallowed Hunt today. I like to save books that I'm pretty sure will be good until I don't have anything acceptably bad from the library to read, and since I finished Tart and Queen of Babble, I guess its number was up. (This is the hazard of reading quickly--I don't want to waste a good book when an other book could acceptably take its place, so I save them until I can savor them. Which actually means I save them until the right moment to rip through them like the cover's on fire. But c'est la vie.

Day...7? I think. Yeah, I started it last Sunday. Lots of work today. lots of fiddly little stupid bits, but ultimately a good chunk of some bushes. Of course, based on the colors in the pictures, I may have mis-identified a couple of the greens, but hey, it looks fine and just so I'm consistent, no one will notice. At least that's what I'm hoping.

Okay, so I *was* just going to watch the last episode on disc 5 and then go to sleep. but it had a cliff-hanger! (I don't remember what it was anymore, but it had one, trust me. And then once I watched the next to last episode, well it would just be stupid to stop then! So I was up waaaay late. way.

Here there be spoilers )

Day six:

And you would not believe how many times I had to take out the new flame bush there on the right--I kept putting it at the edge of the roof, instead of the edge of the cream bit. I think I picked it all out twice. Third time is apparently the charm. You will also notice some windows look more finished, and the stray threads are migrating out to the edge, since the middles are all filled in. :) I'm still missing the gold color for the roof, though bless this lamp (fancy full spectrum light bought specifically for true colors in my needlework), for I think I've found it. Though if this is true, I've lost my yellow now. Maybe I'll go over them all under this lamp, see if that helps any. I don't think I'll be doing much outlining when I get to that point, so where it's finished, most of it is really finished. My mum always hates outlines, and it's annoying if not done properly, and these colors are clear enough it should pop without the outlining.

I love Veronica Mars. I really do. but I am absolutely in capable of telling the blondes apart. I mean, I've got veronica figured out (and oh, wasn't she the *cutest* in the flashbacks last season, with the "I'm 14" hair. So sweet!) And I caught on to Lily cause she's one of the girls from Mean Girls. But this season, I swear every episode has a new (or worse yet, repeat, cause then I'm supposed to remember her backstory) blond girl in peril. They should have to wear signs!

I had a day 6 picture, but i think instead I'm going to work on it a little more while I watch the last episode on this disc. Only 3 more episodes this season! Oh, and I was pleased to see the dog actually present in several episodes, other than for taking down the bad guys. I mean, he was still just being a prop (Keith Mars, on couch with remote and dog) most of the time, but at least I'd remember that she had a dog between episodes.
tanaise: (conversational)
There was hatred in my heart at work today when all of the documents that i was trying to show people have not been updated since the last time I used them (which would be acceptable if they were my documents, but they're not, I was just being bossy the first time I updated them. Though, possibly more annoying than having to update old documents is not being able to update them because someone else is the owner of the document.

Day 5 Picture: not so much work done, just tree and sky, but I only had about 2 hours work time, and I *was* a little tipsy at the time. (and the CSI was interesting, and unlike when I watch things on my laptop, I can't cross-stitch *while* I'm watching TV, I have to pause to watch.)

I will have Veronica Mars tonight, I think, so I'll have stuff to watch this weekend while working.
tanaise: (Default)
I suspect (and this is just a guess) that the "Northeast PA Walk for PKD!" is not referring to Philip K. Dick.

I cheated, and took my day 4 picture when I finished last night, instead of taking it before I start again tonight (or tomorrow) (okay, so 'cheating' is a bit strong--the other nights I just forgot and/or wasn't sure that I wasn't going to work on it later as well). So.

Day 3

Day 4, on the other hand, would have (possibly) been quite a lot farther if I hadn't unexpectedly missed a row in the middle of the roof, necessitating taking apart everything new I had done so far today, and a good bit of the old stuff as well. And then, after i fixed the skipped row, I also added an extra stitch at one point (horizontally, though) and *didn't* pick out everything a second time. Horizontal is easier to fix--the patches of color are just highlighting bits with wavy edges and nothing else depends on this one so long as I do the top line of the roof next, and then fill it in down from there (and also base other spacing issues off of content that I know is correct, since I do know where the mistake it, at least.)
tanaise: (emo)
I started a new cross stitch sunday. It's a cute little tudor house with bright flowers and a thatched roof and stuff like that (like this one, but simpler). And even though I'm being careful not to over stress my hand (including using a hoop and not doing it for more than a couple of hours an evening), I got a good bit done over two days:

Day one (technically the brown bits on the left of the picture were day two work--I forgot to take a picture before I started)

Day two (only worked for an hour or two, since I'm babying my hand)

And right about the time I took the day two picture, before I started day three's work (started with the roof, even though I still haven't figured out a couple of the colors) I looked at the pattern, and at the stuff I've started--I mean really *looked at*. I started it with the fabric running the wrong way--portrait, which is how my things usually run, not Landscape, which is how this one should run. Cue repeated swearing. So my finished product will be a little different looking than the picture. Full screen, not widescreen. Ah, well, this is why I give them away--so I don't remember every single incorrect stitch every time I look at it.
tanaise: (Default)
So back in march I got all excited about doing a sampler on linen with silk thread.

It's started now. About 6 hours of work, and I'm up to

Not very impressive, I realize, but oh my GOD. It's black linen evenweave, and I'm stitching over two threads. Which means it's just normal looking fabric, so stitching takes extra long as I find each set of threads I need to cross without getting three or just one. Watching TV while Cross-stitching is all that is keeping me from going completely blind from staring at imaginary holes in black fabric. It's also useful for making sure that I'm varying focal lengths regularly, so my eyes don't go crazy with hurting. I pop in something I've seen before, so it doesn't matter if I'm not watching steadily, and my attention goes back and forth between it and the cross-stitch. It may make me make more mistakes on occasion, but I'm okay with fixing things now and then.
