She feeds him the first day, and makes him sleep and worries because he doesn’t seem to know how anything works. She has him help with cooking dinner, and she has to explain everything.

Monday before classes she takes him to the free clinic because he’s still warm to her touch. They get a very busy doctor who reads the notes the nurse had taken (vitals, etc) and says, “It’s probably a virus. Drink lots of liquids, eat right, and have some painkillers to lower the temperature.” He doesn’t have any other symptoms, after all, and it’s not *high* just, 101 or so--just at the point that it actually counts as a fever even.

He doesn’t get any cooler, but he doesn’t get sicker either, so Wednesday she takes him back, and they get a different doctor. This one is friendly, helpful, and careful. She reads all the nurse’s notes, ask questions, and checks everything for herself, carefully. She doesn’t see his wings, exactly, though she moves out of the way of them much better than most people--usually he has to twitch them out of the way before they’re stepped on or something.)

She finally says that since he hasn’t shown any other symptoms, and since he’s had his temperature at an even point, it seems to be just a naturally high temperature. She’s a little worried about it, and gives her a list of things to keep an eye on, just in case. Jana had to tell her that yes, he had been out of the country, so she’s a little worried about tropical/otherwise diseases.

She also questions Jana *extensively* about the circumstances of him arriving. Jana mostly has a story ready, but she knows the doctor doesn’t believe her, and she’s not really sure why she doesn’t just tell the truth and let them take him off. I think maybe she really wishes she could, but she knows he’s not crazy. He’s got wings, what else would he be?

The doctor is also not obviously affected by his calmness. She’s not as upset by it as Jana wants to be at time, but she *really* presses Jana for details. He tells her he’s an angel, and answers all her questions with ‘sensible’ answers that ultimately serve to make her think he’s crazy, possibly dangerous, and probably shouldn’t be with Jana.), and gives Jana a list of options, and fusses over her a lot.

She checks his hands for calluses and finds none. She does find that he has no fingerprints? She isn’t convinced that Jana’s doing the right thing, and since Jana can’t say “It’s okay, he’s an angel,” she gives Jana her private practice card, and makes her promise to call with any concerns.

The weather goes back to Summer, suddenly, and he becomes hot, sulky, and shedding. And she is driven out of her mind, reapeated, by him, and nearly calls the doctor to have him taken away. But ultimately, it goes against her sense of honesty. So she calls, but all they ever do is talk. So she gets another friend, a little older than her, and possibly similar in other ways too--also Indian? But in a medical profession like she will be.

She and Michael will go for dinner there one night, when they’re a couple. She will freak that they’re a couple, because he’s crazy, and Jana will have to tell her no, he’s not. She holds the Doctor’s hand, and tells her to think very hard about (something) and when Michael flexes his wings, she can suddenly see them.
