Three of my housemates moved out this weekend. Two of them may technically have a day or two left of moving things out of the house and to Dorchester (side note for the locals: how come Dorchester doesn't rhyme with Worcester?), but one is in Nebraska by now. This is sad enough as it is (everyone leaves before my birthday!), but one left for a long term thing earlier this week, and in the next month another three will leave.

And I know nice people will move in. In some cases I *know* they're nice people--one boy we interviewed was *fabulous* and hung around for three days, so I'm totally looking forward to him moving in--and in other cases I have to assume that the process works, as it almost always does. but I know good people will move in, I'm just still sad. Some of my very favorite people will be leaving, some have already left, and I"m going to have to meet new people. *whines*

And so does everyone else's pronunciation of 'worcester'.

I did not say there was logic to it. I merely pointed out the spelling difference. For some people, that is a trigger.

That's because people pronounce it wrong.

I know they do. In theory. But then why don't the people who say it right also pronounce Dorchester in such a way that it rhymes?

Because Dorchester is pronounced the way Dorchester is pronounced. They're different words with different spellings!!! So people who pronounce them both correctly will not rhyme.

But if you're not local, and you use the right pronunciation (which is different from the local-right pronunciation), they *do* rhyme. It's just boston people who pronounce them differently.

How do you determine what the right pronunciation is? Popularity outside the area? According to the dictionary, it's the way MA people say it. Go look.
