Dora Goss is discussing, in a casual sort of way, if hollywood would allow for a Hellgirl--ie, large, conventionally unattractive, red, etc. I suppose the closest I can think of is Shrek, where the heroine is rewarded properly for her behavior--I love fairy tales, but I hate when the reward for acting properly is the removal of the obstacle that doesn't exist anymore. Beauty and the Beast--the Beast is rewarded for being a lovable type person by being returned to his original form, yes, but Beauty, who has learned to look below the skin and love people for who they truly are is given a human boyfriend again. Even though that's not what her lesson was, even though that's not who she fell in love with. There's another one I get even more annoyed with for that reason, but I can't think of it at the moment.

I hated Disneys Beauty and the Beast for that - swapping a cool sexy hairy beast person for that anaemic wimp!

Or am I thinking of Robin McKinley's beast, who had trouble turing the pages of books because of the claews?

Don't think it came up in the Disney film, he seemed to handle most things quite easily.. and why my brain has made this next connection I've o clue but I suppose the whole sex thing could be more of a problem if the beast was a different species but then again in a Disney film thats less than relevant :>

The nice thing about McKinley's Beauty was that Beauty was none too comfortable with the changes that had overcome her beau; I thought that the rather abrupt ending was not a nod to the fact that the fairy tale was over, but that, possibly, it wasn't going to go super-well.

Ah, but only villainesses can be ugly

It's a rule.

I remember back in the days of She-Ra noticing the discrepancy between the overt and underlying messages. You see, they kept having "message" episodes about how beauty isn't important and just because someone is ugly does not mean they are bad.

Except, the way the showed that character X wasn't evil after all? Why, she turns pretty at the end!

Um. Hello mixed messages.

I'd take Maleficent over Aurora any day. But maybe that's just me.

I think I put that wrong. Vilainesses can be pretty (although more often sexy than 'pretty') but 'ugly' by and large equals evil.

He has to be human to beget an heir, obviously. Are you forgetting the *entire point of her existence*? ;)
