So, at dinner today while talking to a number of people who've taught english in other countries, we got onto a discussion of differences in British and American English. One girl's students were taught, "Have you got a pen." instead of "Do you have". And it was an interesting discussion. I had to get the dictionary at one point, just to get it all straight in our heads. Watch:

So, the other day, I got up late, got dressed in a hurry, nearly got in trouble running down the stairs with untied shoelaces. Of course, it turned out that I'd got the time wrong for my interview, so I got to sit around in my work clothes for a while. I didn't get the job--the interview just didn't get me, I think. I couldn't get across to him what a good job I'd do. When I got home, my roommates got it in their heads that we should get our act together, get our asses in gear, and get going. So we were only planning to get down, didn't think we'd get lucky, but I got picked up by a guy at the bar. "I've got your number tattooed on my ass," he said, and I got kinda turned on. So we were getting it on, and he couldn't get it up. I guess that's what you get when you drink like that. Luckily, I still got off, so it wasn't a total waste. And getting some is always better than not getting any, right?

See? wasn't that fun? :)

I have a book called Divided by a Common Language that is all about the differences between American English and British English. Fascinating stuff (at least I think so). Especially when we use the same phrases to mean different - even opposite - things (such as "to table an issue").
