I'm reading Fiona Walker's newest book, "Lots of Love" now, and oddly enough, I'm being reminded of the Alice Hoffman book "Turtle Moon" which is one of my very very very favorites of her books. It's very subtle, but I love it. And like Turtle Moon, it makes me very sad.

See, American romance novels, they're like candy. Everything is always happily ever after at the end of them, and you wouldn't want it any other way. The British novels I love some much, they don't work that way. Yes, they end up with the right people at the end, but one of my favorite authors (Jill Mansell) likes to do that by killing the front runner off at a crucial point. Always someone gets horribly hurt by someone else. They don't have stupid fights that revolve around the fact that while they're perfectly willing to get naked with each other, they're incapable of saying "maybe we should talk a little" One of my very favorites that I don't have (my best friend in DC and I would take turns importing books from Amazon, so I have about half of the ones I really want, and about 6 or 8 that I really don't want),

This is where she finds out that her happily ever after of the last book really isn't what she wants at all, and ends up with the right person. They're not romances. They're more like...love stories. I mean, you *know* that by the end of the book, she's going to be with a guy, and they'll be happy. But an awful lot of other things can happen before then.

This book, it's British, and I love it. And I'll probably have to put it on my wishlist at amazon.uk, and when I'm rich again and can afford to buy books that cost several million dollars to ship to me, I'll buy it.

Tonight, instead of writing or doing anything useful, I've been wallowing. I've got allergies or something acting up, so my head ached, my ears are being sensitive to noise, and the back of my neck aches--which it always does when my ears are too stuffed up. This, combined with the really really tight skin resulted in the need to wallow this evening. Mek blames soda, which is probably to blame, but not for the same reason as she blames it. I've been way too used to drinking sodas cause they're easy, and they're right there, and I can toss them back no problem. Whereas juice involves effort and thought and a cup. but so I took my allergy med and re-upped my prescription, and took decongestant, and a hot bath, and put on moisturiser, so I should feel better. I do feel better, just still...tight. So I think I'll go read for a little bit in bed, and drink lots of water, cause I have plenty upstairs so I can take my pain killers before sleep or when I wake up in the morning. And hopefully tomorrow will be less painful. And remind me to drink more juice/water/tea/whatever when you see me.
