I went to school with a boy named Lochlan O'Leary my senior year, his freshman yeah. His dad's Patrick O'Leary, who is a SF writer. When I saw that Patrick was going to be at WFC I was all excited, and got Loch to tell his dad I was going to be there, and he's the *only* person I was actually brave enough to talk to (other than about a 5 minute conversation with Gordon in which he told me what sports teams to mock within JJA's sight).

I was chatting with Loch tonight, and he told me that his dad had shown him the picture of me that was in the Locus because of Clarion. I told him how cool I'd felt, getting to hang out however briefly with Patrick and his friends. Lochlan, being a child of and not fan of, told me that his dad and Kathe Koja are 'big geeks' (his words, not mine.). :) I said, "I was at Clarion, breeding ground of big geeks. It was cool to me." And Loch told me I'm cool even on my own, and that I'm also cool enough that if I lived nearby, I could probably hang out with his dad. :)

In retrospect, it's almost an insult. "Oh, yeah? well you're so 'cool,' you could hang out with my dad."

Oh, and I was right: there were people I knew in the crowd at the peace march. Loch, his brother, and his mom all came down from MI for the protest. Id just like to warn people I know: if you visit DC and don't let me know, I will kick your butt. I may not be able to see you, blah blah blah, but I want to know you're coming, so if I really need to see you, I can rearrange my life and make it happen.

The new Johnny Cash song makes me laugh so hard I nearly fall off my chair.

I dreamt about getting an email from Strange Horizons last night. the really annoying thing is that I opened it up, and I read it, and I still didn't know what it said. Not that I couldn't tell what it said--Aphasia?--but that it didn't make sense to me. I kept reading it over and over again trying to tell if it was "yes we want this" or "no we don't", and I couldn't tell. So frustrating. :)

Obviously, there has been no email yet. 36 days. I am really trying to keep the fret monkey out at pasture, but lately he sneaks back in the middle of the night and tells me that I was rejected the day my email wasn't working because, you know, I'm not fretting enough or something.

I'm still being lazy and not writing, so I'm reading Conjunctions still. Last time was Joe Haldeman "Guardian"--pretty darn good. I can't remember what else by him I've read, but it was good. And then China's story. *so* icky. but good. but *so* icky. Andy Duncan's I couldn't manage--I'm not always good with surreal stories, and I just couldn't read it. So I'm on Gene Wolfe, "Knight."
