I strongly recommend that all candidates post position papers in the comments below, and that everyone read them before voting. Alternately, you can just fake it.

My meanness platform is that two people studiously avoided acknowledging that I exist at Wiscon, even while in fairly close proximity, and for no personal advantage. Chance has only one person avoid her that much. Clearly if *two* people do it, I must be meaner than Chance.

Or else they're so afraid of Chance's meanness they aren't willing to shun her for fear of the consequences.

Is that all it takes? Uh oh. I have at least a half dozen people who do that to me. Of course some of them are people whose stories I've rejected so maybe they don't count, but others are people I've done favors for, so go figure.

I might be mean WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IT!!

I have known one of them since 1996, though primarily on the internet, and I haven't been in the same physical space much since then, but she's started writing, so things could get interesting. I don't know what she would do if I ever pushed the matter. The other one has lapsed in her avoidance of me *if* I am in close proximity to someone she wants to talk to. But not often, and never ever in private. Her commitment to the cause is admirable!

I am sure they would both attest to my meanness, if they remember who I am. I could also get the dog to sign an affidavit of meanness (Item, that the before named did willfully and with malice aforethought, bring into this house one (1) cat who gets to sleep on the bed.)

Really, I am a mean person. Or at least I am loads better at being mean than I am at being cute.

That's pretty daunting, Celia. And you seemed so nice!

I sometimes only give my cat the treats after he knocks everything off the counter and bites my ankles. Does that count?

Well, my cat just got up in disgust when your email got delivered, and stalked off in direction of the kitchen. So either he thinks you're mean or he wants to try this himself.

(He makes noises when he does things. A squeak as he jumped off the bed, a chirrup as he went down the hall, a prrt when he came back in the room.)

Oh, the animals have progressed, I said to Hannah earlier today, to the Cold War Embassy Party level. They are cordial, but do not interact, and there is an aura of restrained dislike around the whole thing. Of course, after I said this, there was some sort of altercation, possibly started by the cat outside of my sight, resulting in the dog nearly snarling at the cat and being sent out of the room in disgrace. (That's right, Russia! Back to your bed.)

Ha! That's great. According to that Dog Whisperer guy on cable, the cat is always in charge, btw.

I am the gold standard of mean.

See if you have to compare yourself to me, then you are not the meanest.

It's the 21st century, man! I am the fiat currency of mean.

PS, are you saying "a celia" is the base unit of mean?

If you were REALLY mean, people would be afraid to shun you! (DAMMIT I wrote that last night and then Hannah came in and beat me to it.) See, I am SO MEAN that everyone has to act like they love me.

Um, but I think my platform includes the claim that Chance is meaner. I read that on the Internet. I've gotten confused about what counts as winning, now. But whatever it is, I'm doing it!

DAMMIT I wrote that last night and then Hannah came in and beat me to it.

This is because, as you yourself have acknowledged, I am meaner than you.

(But I am stealth mean, which is the kind that doesn't poll well.)

So, apparently, is Jessie since I am winning (losing?) the poll.

I would submit that this is a biased sample.

(Stealth mean was probably the wrong way to describe it. I am surgical-strike mean, not equal-opportunity.)

You are not mean. You are a flim-flam artist.

Well most of these people don't even know me! Also, I am SO MEAN that I hide my meanness on the Internet. Then, when people encounter me in real life, they let down their guard and I can double-mean them. See, you're the kind of mean that other people know about and can avoid! Whereas I am sneaky and thus, TWICE AS MEAN.

I notice that everyone knows Chance is mean.

Yes, I'm intrigued--they all know she's mean, but only half of them think she's the meanest. Or, alternately, the other half are too scared to vote for her.

She's back in England, folks! She can't hurt you from there.

You threw Jodi in there for comedy relief, didn't you?

Though she does break people's hearts for fun...

Yeah. So, I'm getting this: http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=16462801

It's not the most attractive spindle ever, but it sounds like a good starter, and it's bottom like I wanted. (and it comes with pretty stuff.) And as I buy it, I mention to Jodi that I want eventually to be buying things like this: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=cart_raf_img_3&listing_id=25511281 because I want to spin silk cause I think it's neat. She says, "Oh, you'll need a .5 spindle for that. Have you picked one out yet?"

(yes. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=23300176 But that's not the point!)
