Nov. 14th, 2007 01:07 pmIn other completely unrelated news, I've been reading a couple of Dawn Cook books lately, and they're much less sucky than they could be, and than the covers imply with their generic fantasy-ness. The Decoy Princess was to me, very much the sort of book that we keep looking for to give to the next generation of female readers--strong female character who gets to keep doing things for herself. She can't save her family, but she saves herself, she gets stronger and braver, and makes friends who complement her skills. She tries, she fails sometimes, she doesn't others. Obviously, since it's about her, she succeeds in the end. But it's a good trip there, and i put the next one on reserve.
First Truth I'm still reading, but not yet annoyed with it halfway through, and I just put the next two on reserve, so I've got a good feeling about it. Or I'm fooling myself. We'll see.
Evolution, Me, and other Freaks of Nature was also *EXCELLENT*. It's ultimately about a very Christian girl figuring out that she can believe in evolution without having to stop believing in God, despite what her church tries to tell her. It's also got relationship issues--with her family, with her former friends, with her new friends--that she has to work through, and it was really sweet. I'll admit that I got horribly sniffly, and possibly even a little tearful at the end of the book, but hormones may also have something to do with that.
