Aug. 28th, 2002 10:53 pmOkay, I'm going to ramble about Clanless here, cause it's easier to think here than in Word, somehow.
Okay, Clanless is my novel. I haven't actually written it yet, we're at...10K words. But I know I've got too much story and setting to fit into a short story. I'd been thinking a group of short stories, but that also doesn't work right. this setting is too complicated to let people come in unguided, and repeating everything also won't work well.
So anyways, it's the story of Kiah, who is Clanless. Clanless here is good, not bad. She's above the clans, sort of a federal power over the clans's state-like powers. There are the same sorts of divisions of labour between Clanless as the federal government, just no real executive branch. Kiah's police-type. Her sisters were both law types--Jere was a lawyer, and Peri was a judge. And Kiah's amazing at her job. She loves it, she does an excellent job at it. She's a total bitch, and amazingly social conscious. that's not right. She's aware of her own social standing and where others measure up to it. Part of the problem is that the boy she falls in love with is outside the social classes. He's declanned, ritually kicked out of his clan for reasons he won't explain. And he won't tell her what he was before, and she doesn't know how to relate to him, and it drives her crazy. She *always* assesses people based on their clan standing. The major dilemma in the story, which I know, even if I don't know the minor stuff, or how they'll handle anything, is that Kiah has a pregnancy scare. And Eoin tells her he wouldn't marry her, no matter what, because he doesn't have anything to bring into the relationship. So she decides to find out what happened, why he was declanned, and see if she can't fix it at least enough that they can get married and have kids and all that. She's also got to start thinking about what she wants to do after she gets out of the Clanless, and her niece, who gets kidnapped early on in the book, is following in her footsteps into the Clanless.
