tanaiseOoops. Turns out that the way I was so sure that I had to have sent this story to SH already was true. It fell in the black hole of stuff that happened after I'd last updated the online version of my subtracker (mid 2003, apparently) but before the stuff that I could recreate using my email. I was so careful, too. I checked back and forth through my emails, and couldn't find a single one about it, so I thought it was safe. But no, I am informed that I sent it 7/17/04 and had it rejected not long after. (alas, in the loss of the tracker original, I have also lost the wording of the rejection, which I usually keep in case it's something insightful, or sometimes just to feel better about sucking. I mean, sure, they won't buy my stories. but they'll say nice things about them, and that counts for something, right? They could just not buy my stories, they don't have to say nice things.
Oddly enough, the reason I was so sure I sent this story to them already was I knew I'd sent them Listening, and I thought for sure I wouldn't have sent that before I sent Nightlight. But that *is* in the tracker--it went in october of 2003, so I was right, but for the wrong reason.
I shall have to go crash a bookstore this week, maybe, and check the Year's Best SF to see if there are any FB stories in it. But it's sooooo hot, and I am not a hot person.
And I opened up the story that I want to have for August 17th, and it's just...nothing tonight. I think my brain can only write in it every other day. So I will try something else and we'll see if tomorrow it wants to be written.
