Worldbuilding

tanaiseI was considering a post about my worlds/universes, since a) I don't seem to have stories that want to go anywhere now and b) I don't have work I want to do. So, here goes.
In general, my "worlds" are social contructs more than geographic places. I only really care about geography when it changes the way my people live. So in Hoc Vale my characters live in a vaguely Arizona sort of place because I needed a particular climate to support my story. Clanless is landbound because I have no native Aquatic Clans. Stuff like that.
This is also the world that I think of as my Wooden Ghosts world. This is fairly normal generic fantasy world (probably steampunk sort of tech level, I think) except that something happened about 100-150 years before where upon people stopped dying the same way they were supposed to, and started hanging out as ghosts until they were banished properly. (Or, possibly, the people died the same way they always had, it was just that others had started noticing it.) Ghosts who aren't Mourned hang out in dead wood, be it a dead tree or a ballroom floor. And this culture still uses wood for a lot of things, so they've had to develop ways of working around that. They have pest removal people who handle ghosts, basically--who banish ghosts from wood, who seal it against futher infestation, and who work on permenantly banishing ghosts through Mourning them. It's not my all time favorite world, but it's a fun one to think about.
This is *totally* my favorite world at the moment. It's generic modern but not this world. Just like this world. The fun bit for me is that the society is set up around basically totem animals--the Clans. I'm playing around with it a lot and keep making more clans and more cultural interactions and stuff like that.
This is a 'tomorrow' type world. Very strong space program, somewhat more advanced tech wise. It's closer to the SF golden age ideal, basically, but with fewer robots. Bough also is set in the same world, albeit in the fairly distant future of it.
This is pretty much our normal world with occasional MR stuff. It's not Newford, it's just basically Kelly Link. There aren't faeries, necessarily, but strange things happen.
Okay, and now I have to go print out my notes from other stories and stuff and go home, so I'm posting this and running off. I may come back to this subject in other posts, though, be forwarned.
