Okay, I had another one of those damn audiotory hallucinations last night--drifting off to sleep, and then suddenly a noise like someone had dropped an armload of 2-x-4s onto concrete just by my bad ear. They terrify me, and I have no idea what causes them--is this a bad sign of something, or is it just my brain being weird because of my hearing loss? I'm starting to think that perhaps it's just an ear thing--I seem to get it when I try to fall asleep on my good ear, so it may be something funky with, I don't know, air pressure and my bad ear. I'll have to pay attention the next time it happens. Of course when it actually happens, I'm too busy getting my heart to stop racing to analyze it...

No, but I just asked my dad to ask my uncle, who's an audiologist.

This happens to me all the time, I thought it was just me. I don't have any other hearing problems, as far as I know.

What I often hear while I'm lying in bed at night is a high pitched drone, (so high that it is at the edge of my ability to hear,) followed by a pop, after which the high pitch momentarily swells to an almost painful level, then decrescendos back to the original level over the next few seconds.
I don't think it's a hallucination, as I've never heard it anywhere else, but I can't imagine what could be causing it.

Could be associated with sleep paralysis? Kinda like having some bits of your brain awake and some asleep... I only seem to get doorbells, telephones or people banging on the door, in the early hours of the morning - only the stuff that means I'm out of bed and halfway downstairs before I realise it isn't real...
