Okay, travel update. I flew into Detroit from Lansing just about exactly at the same time as the thunderstorms: first we got held up 20+ minutes in flight, on a flight that was only supposed to be 40 minutes long. Then lightning was hitting the runways, so they weren't letting planes load or unload. So the flight got in an hour later than it should have. No real problem, as everyone had been delayed. Lena--who had ended up on my flight because the direct Lansing to Minneapolis flight goes via Detroit and changes planes--ran off to her flight. I stood around wondering where the hell my 3:12 flight was, and what was up with it. The monitor with the Ws on it was turned off at that gate, and I didn't know which way to head to find out what was up with it. Finally tagged along with a group who were also heading to National. We get to the gate, but the 3:12 was cancelled, and they'd rebooked us onto the 6:47 am Monday morning flight.

Now, because it was weather, no chance in getting the airport to spring for a place to stay. So I was facing the prospect of 15 hours in the airport. Oh, and of course, since I was going from mid-80s Lansing to a DC summer, I'd decided to wear a tank top, and not take an over shirt. So I was so cold already, and it had only been about 15 minutes. This is when I wanted to start crying.

But I'm 25 years old, and I'm a big girl, and even though I absolutely can not stand travelling by myself, I never end up traveling with someone else, so I'm getting used to doing everything all by myself. So I get the woman at the counter to put me on the standby list for the 5:30 flight. I'm 5th on the list. She *really* doesn't think I'll make it on. I'm hoping she's wrong, but I prepare myself for spending 15 hours in the airport. Mostly by calling everyone on my phone, and gossiping madly. I was lonely.

Then the 5:30 gets held cause the computer system was having problems. (they didn't say 'crashed' :) I decided that waiting to before that the computers were working was probably a good idea. But also that I didn't want to know why the plane wasn't working, cause I don't need details. "it don't work" is enough for me. I prefer to be blissfully unaware of the workings of the airplane) So they bumped it back 15 minutes, and then a half hour. And then announce that they were looking for a new plane, and gave us notice that it could take 2 hours to find one. Not like I've got anything better to do with my time.

Well, I lucked out and there were spare seats on the increasingly ill-named 5:30 flight, so I got home at a little after 9. Whereby I discovered that one of my suitcases was in detroit still. but I really liked that so much better than my suitcase being in DC, and me being in Detroit. They dropped my bag off last night, so everything's good now.

And now I'm pondering World Fantasy Con. I have always wanted to go to Minneapolis.

Ooh, my condolences. I dislike nearly everything about Detroit, and the airport certainly doesn't help sway my opinion :) But, if you're ever in town again, drop me a note or give a jingle.

Gah. Sounds like my flight out of Lansing on Sunday. And my flight out of MSP was delayed. And so was Tim and Serena's and I'm hoping they caught theirs which was only delayed by about half an hour. Mine was delayed by an hour and a half. We had a plane, but no flight crew. Feh. I was even more grateful that I'd managed to bring my luggage on with me. Waiting in DIA while 2 flights from MSP landed at the same time and dropped luggage to baggage claim at the same time was not my idea of a good time.

Mmm, all the cool kids are doing it. And WFCs are usually really cool. :)

My horrid travel story is about getting stuck at O'Hare for twelve hours and not daring to leave the terminal because the weather was supposed to clear up "any minute."
But I wasn't by myself, and I wasn't coming back from an artistic and educational endeavor that ought to make all of my friends and family proud of me.
It's good that you are home safely, and I'm so glad that you had the experience.
