Aug. 16th, 2004 01:59 pmNo work again today. Well, that's not true. I had about 30 minutes of work when I first got in, fixing broken links. And then someone tried to give me work, but gave me the files in the wrong format (and yes, I could convert them to the right format in, oh, minutes, but that's not the point). So mostly I spent my morning checking out job postings. And finding, well, pretty much nothing. Lots of nothing. And some maybes, and one or two that actually look interesting, and a technical/creative temp agency that pays real money, so let us all hope that my skills are up to their standards. Because literally, if they could promise me 20 hrs a week, I could make as much money as I am here.
Um. The weekend. Lots of reading. I went to the library on saturday and brought home a stack which I promptly read the majority of in two days. No writing. As a protective measure, I made apple crisp and peach crisp Saturday night. Defense against having to write, of course. They turned out ultimately very well. The apple was too sweet in my book and didn't have enough cinnamon, but it's really hard to truly mess up a dish which is apples, brown sugar, butter, flour, and oatmeal. The peach (which I don't eat) has almond bits and nutmeg. ooooh. fancy.
Sunday, more lounging. watched about a boy. I'll buy the DVD if it has the music videos on it as well. Good dinner. Good weekend.

Date: 2004-08-17 05:43 am (UTC)i don't know lodi apples. a new england variety?
just got a call from a new orchard that we're dealing with this year - he says the cold weather last week sped up the season, put blush on the apples, and he'll probably truck his first shipment on friday.
apples! apples not from new zealand!

Date: 2004-08-17 06:32 am (UTC)These apples are from PA, according to their little labels, so they're last year's crop, as if I couldn't guess they were Controlled Atmosphere from the texture alone. (I am *so* an apple snob like most people wouldn't believe.)

Date: 2004-08-17 06:46 am (UTC)right on, sister. if you can taste the difference between CA-storage and fresh, you're a buddy of mine.
do you happen to know the mountaineer or nittany varieties? we had a line on them from west virginia for years and years. sadly the orchard went out of business, and i sorely miss those mountaineers. not only for the sweet/tart taste: they were trapezoidal in shape. freaky and fun to hand-stack.

Date: 2004-08-17 07:11 am (UTC)Are you coming to world con this year?
Re: the core of the issue
Date: 2004-08-17 08:01 am (UTC)no, i won't be at world con. pout. it's big fat bummer, but baby and other factors are eclipsing convention-going at the moment.
once isaiah is a little older, i really, really want to make it to readercon. is readercon held in apple season???
