damnit, I was hiccupping, and I promised myself I could get the Ash CD that the song i'm listening to belongs on if I hiccuped one more time, and so of course I'm not hiccuping anymore.

This, incidentally, is a tried and fairly true method of curring hiccups--tell the afflicted person that if they hiccup one more time you'll give them a quarter, or a dollar or a new CD or whatever, and almost always the person stops. My roommate is the only one I know who can keep hiccuping after the bribe. I didn't know if it would work as a self inflicted thing, but apparently it does, at least for me. *sulks* I really wanted that CD, too. Actually, there's like 4 ash Cds I want now, and they're all imports. And the Booth CD. I've even held them in my hands and found the willpower to put them back down.

Do this at WorldCon. I can keep hiccuping 'til the damn cows come home. Loud, body-shaking hiccups, too.

Has anyone tried bribing you to stop? Cause nothing works for me usually, but bribery has always worked since I started it. One of my coworkers taught me the trick, and I don't know why it works, but it's got an impressive record so far. (and I'm pretty sure my roommate cheats.)

Bribery has not worked (or has worked, depending on how you look at it: I have gotten my strawberries etc. and kept hiccuping). Requests have not worked ("Would you please hiccup again for me?"). Pain has not worked (stomping hard on my foot). Granular substances have not worked (spoonful of sugar). Water has not worked, either drunk or poured on my head. People come up with all kinds of things to get me to stop hiccuping, and the most effective (~50%) is a long hug from someone I trust who is much, much bigger than me.

And hey, if it doesn't work, at least I got the hug.

I get crazy loud hiccups, too.

We'll try the bribe thing.

Hiccups

This is widely held to belong to the "amuse the audience" category, but it actually works for me about 3/4 of the time:

Fill a glass of water halfway, bend over at the waist, drink it all it one go, remaining upside down and drinking out of the back of the glass.

Efficacy fails if the audience makes you laugh in the middle of it so that water goes up your nose.

I got the hiccups again. Timprov offered me a quarter. He had to pay up.

I'd say "so there!", but I didn't want to keep hiccuping. Hiccupcoughhiccoughcuphiccuphiccupcough. Not fun.

perhaps the method was valid, but the bribe was insufficient. I suggest ice cream next time. Or a back rub. Or a pony.
