Cloudy, with a chance of helicopters
Jul. 29th, 2004 04:57 pmthat was the weather yesterday. Today there was a protest that a number of my housemates were talking about going to, a no Blood for Oil march. My coworkers IMed me at one point to give be the indymedia site, and I got to watch real time as people filed reports of growing tension and antsy cops. I called my house at one point and told them that skipping the protest now might be in their best interest, or if they did go to be very careful. I still worry. I think some had gone, so I'm just hoping they weren't up in the scary part.
Today, I am reading journals, and i stumble upon
gwendabondgirl talking about girl books. To be exact, YA novels with strong female characters/narrators. I have gone through and added all books listed to my library list, and I have to think about my own list. But I would like to add at this point that there's no way it's wrong to like reading the weetzie bat books. No way. It is also not wrong to name characters after characters in the books. Or to name dogs after them either.
Robert smith and the DJ on my station are talking about the royal family and such and he's anti, basically. And the DJ says, "Well, what are you going to do?" and Robert says, "I can't tell you cause they'd put me in jail."
(this is sort of political, Pen, but not really)
As I walked at lunch, I crossed Copely Square, where there's a lot of protest stuff going on every day now. And someone held up a sign that said "the Lesser of two evils is still evil." and I thought, "huh." cause regardless of whether or not you believe him, he's got a point, but the real problem is, it doesn't matter. If you don't pick an evil, then in essence you're saying that you don't care which one wins, and that's clearly not true or you wouldn't be protesting. And it frustrates me, because I do believe them that there are problems with both candidates, and that the protesters deserve to be heard and listened to, but, ultimately, if you don't pick your lesser evil, you may end up with someone else's lesser evil.

Date: 2004-07-29 02:12 pm (UTC)Well said. The thing I don't get is if you asked someone to pick between Pain or Lesser Pain, I'm pretty certain they'd pick Lesser Pain. But for some reason making teh same decision about so-called evil just doesn't seem a worthwhile use of their time.
