Dinner last night:  Vegatable couscous (so good.  *Soooooo* good), with a tomato and carmelized onion yogurt sauce to go with it.  (Low-fat yogurt, so I could only just taste it as I didn't want an upset stomach, but kitchen boy is going to stock (yeah, the first time I wrote it as stalk, go ahead, laugh at me) whole milk yogurt for cooking from now on), sauteed green beans, and a salad that vanished faster than you might have thought possible.  There were no leftovers, which may be partly because he's still getting used to the amount of food he needs to cook, but is undoubted also related to the fact that everyone had seconds.

Dinner the night before last:  salad (ditto, but with homemade croutons),  ginger basmati rice, and baked tofu with an orange-soy reduction (which I tried, and which was probably fabulous for those who like the texture of tofu.  Last week one day we had salmon terriayki which was even better as cold leftovers the next day.  And still I think my weight is creeping down.

Today, though, I suspect that people can feel sorry for me--it's a barbeque, and even the veggieburgers have MSG in them (to be exact, "autolyzed yeast extract"), so I'll probably have crudites and hamburger buns for dinner.  But who knows.  It's the last day for the old cook--she's moving somewhere, though I don't think that they even know where yet.

And now it's work time, but I should mention that yesterday in an unusual example of computer dexterity, I managed to delete most of my buddy list--some of my clarion list, all of my workshop list, and a large number of other people (for example, yesterday I think I had 70-some on my friends list. Today I have 21), so if you want to make sure you're on my buddy list, make sure to IM me today so I remember that you're a real person.

skim milk gives you more of an upset stomach than whole? Hmmm,
perhaps I should try switching, since I always seem to have an upset stomach after cereal or drinking milk...

Lower-fat milk has milk solids added in to thicken it and make up for the tasty fat that was removed. when they make milk solids, they make something which is related to MSG, so any thing with low-fat milk or milk solids gives me a stomach ache. I thought I was lactose intolerant for a long time, and thus would only have milk as a treat now and then, and would always splash out on whole milk or fancy ice cream since it was a treat. When I found out that there's MSG in lower fat milk, I switched completely to whole milk, including yogurt (Dannon LaCreme), and cheese, and there's no problems any more. It's so nice, because I've always had a serious addiction to milk, and I hated giving it up.

Thanks. That's really really useful. I was starting to think I was lactose intolerant too. I might be, since my adverse reaction to MSG is a massive headache and having my jaw lock up not stomach pain that I've noticed, but I should try this...

Well, it's not exactly MSG, so you may not be as allergic to it. If you search...how did I find it? Autolyzed yeast extract and MSG, you'll find a kinda scary site with lists of everything that MSG is in, and I'm pretty sure that's where I found my info. And I would have shrugged it off as craziness, except that it seems to have been true.
