Not many days make me think, "Thank god I never had to take Organic Chem," but this is actually the second day in a row I've thought that. I'm changing word documents into XML files to be made into online quizzes for some internet board Houghton Mifflin runs. It sounds worse than it actually is. I don't love it, but it's not numbers, and I get to run macros, which is something I'm not very familar with.

Yesterday, while waiting for someone to come rescue us from the front office, I read over the HM childrens books, and discovered that there's a new Nick Earls book coming out, and I'm so excited. It's just a YA, but I love his stuff. So now I must just wait. *waits*

I'm on the look out now for a fairly long, dark/navy blue lambswool scarf. I realise this is probably the wrong time to be looking for them, but I need it now so I can get started on a project for my dad. So any pointers as to where to look would kick ass. It doesn't have to be lambswool, but I want it as soft as possible or my hands will probably start to bleed before I finish it. And it's so frustrating because I know exactly where to go to get one, and it would even be like, $6-10 there, which clearly would be ideal, but alas, that's in Rome, so it's not actually much help for me here.

Oh, and I also need questions to ask the Beacon Hill Friends House. See, they'll ask me questions, and then I get to ask them questions. And I never have questions, so I'm collecting them now so I actually will have some. Thus far I've got one--asking them about conflict resolution, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do discuss that. But anything anyone else can think of would be good.

Yesterday I bought my fancy pass, which I will now worry about losing for the next 3.x weeks. And then since I was at the Commuter rail place already, and there was a train leaving in 15 minutes, and I had a free ride since no one took my ticket last time, I said what the heck. Rode next to cute blonde boy who kept falling asleep over a business/economics text book (all the funness of math, now! with extra dry bits so you fall asleep faster), and about halfway home, I realised a) that we were wearing the same pants and b) that it so wouldn't work as a pick up line.

Just a YA!

Well, not 'just a YA' in the grand scheme of things, 'just a YA' in the 'less book than I want, but better than no book' scheme of things.

Do you have to slide the whole pass through a slot (like the DC metro tickets?) or does it swipe just the edge (I remember something like this on the T)?

If it swipes, punch a hole in one corner and attach it to your keyring. I did this in college with my id and T pass. I never went anywhere without id, T pass and housekeys, so it was all on one ring. If I lost that, I'd be royally screwed, so if I was going out without a bag (rare), I'd clip it to a lanyard and wear it either around my neck.

Ah, see, in DC I had a Smart Pass, which you just flashed, so I could even keep it in my purse and just bump the bag against the reader (and on one memorable occasion, bumped it with my butt to avoid having to dig it out of my back pocket. This is credit card sized, and needs to be swiped which means I can't put it on my keychain cause then I wouldn't be able to keep my keys in my pocket.

Still reading YA? How about you gargle moonshine or maybe get a lobotomy or three? May of 2004 is not a time for regression therapy.

Regardless of the genre, I'm tickled ultraviolet that you have a job. Given my own brutal unemployment experiences, I hate reading about my friends' problems getting jobs.

And tell Beacon Hill that you're in no mood for questions. This is a time for action, not quiet contemplation. Tell them you're a woman of guts and rigor and you will turn their organization into an iconoclastic juggernaut.

Your very presence should tell them that you supercede all interrogations, goddamnit!

oh, bah. It's not regression if you've never stopped reading it, and trust me, you'd like his stuff. Perfect Skin. Go find it. You will not regret it. He's got a slightly odd style of writing, but it's well worth the minor brain adjustments.

In regards to YA lit., I quote the Chinese ke(3) neng(2) which means "maybe." I'm always up for exciting writing, but if the subject matter is trivial, I'm liable to wretch. On my weekly foray to Olssson's, I'll see if I can find anything by that dude.

You could knit a scarf. Or crochet, even.

I considered that (well, actually having someone else make it for me, but same difference), but I really need it woven or the cross-stitch won't work right on it.
