Sadness

Joan Aiken died (another obituary)

I love her stuff, but I remember being very surprised when other people did too. I suppose it was mostly just because I'm used to living somewhere where no one else reads what I read, but I remember being pleased/surprised when I saw Kelly Link list her as a favorite author (though that meant later on I wasn't surprised when the latest LCRW has a whole bibliography as their marginalia). I've read a lot of it--some of her YA novels I'm not so happy with, and never finished or even really started, but I loved her alt history novels, and I've actually got them through Dido and Pa, thanks to Daedalus books having the whole lot of them for cheap last year. The good news is that there's another of the books due to come out, but of course, the sad news is that it'll be the last one. Sadness! Woe! I should declare a day or two of her and read all them over again, though I'm missing the latest ones, and can't remember where I put her fairytale books. I suppose maybe next week I could get everything else I don't have out of the library--Arabel's Raven, and the sequels, and A Necklace of Rainbows. Sadness! Woe!

:-( My favorite Aiken as a kid was Armitage, Armitage, Fly Away Home. I have a copy now, thanks to my favorite librarian; I'll have to go read "The Land of Trees and Heroes."

Oh no! Woe indeed! I read her books all through childhood (and 'A Necklace Of Rainbows' is wonderful, btw), and then discovered her adult books a couple of years ago. And I found out she lives about 30 miles from me. And, it's just really sad :(
I need to find her YA short story collections - I have one, but there was another with a deeply peculiar story about a blind man and a floating cathedral with whirlpools...
