Sep. 11th, 2006 10:57 amI had been feeling like I had lots of work to do, but if I do, I didn't actually write any of it down, so I've now no idea what I need to do. (Oh, wait. Just remembered one thing.)
Yesterday I read, let's see. The rest of The Hallowed Hunt, the Compass Rose, and The Thirteenth House. The worst, of course, was The Compass Rose, but not as bad as I thought it would be. (of course that much badness would be tough to live up to.) It wasn't *good* though, so don't make that mistake, just an interesting read. Who decided that matriarchal societies require non-traditional marriages? And I don't mean same sex marriage, I mean harems or group marriages nearly the size of my house? End of book one, the marriage is up to the main character (female, from the matricarchical society), two blond foreigners (both from a partriarchy, one blind and possibly crippled, though i think they forgot that by the end of the book), an Arabic type foreigner, the main character's (celtic looking) bodyguard of 9 years, an escaped foreign woman (from the same place as the blond boys) and possibly a random stranger that they passed on their way in to the palace to kill the bad guy (who is also blind(the stranger, not the bad guy)). Oh, and three babies, as both the women are pregnant, the main character with twins. And apparently, in the sequel, the marriage gets larger.
The Hallowed Hunt was, of course, lovely. I'm trying to decide if it's my favorite of the series or not, but I can't decide. Had some creepy bits in it, that's for sure. Her stuff is always very visual to me--I get a very clear mental picture of most scenes, which is nice. Usually I don't care that much about what the place looks like, but hers are always just right.
The Thirteenth House, which I just got on Thursday or Friday was *excellent* though I think Sharon Shinn's books always are. I have mixed feelings about the ending, as the love story involved a married man, and thus there was no way for it to end happily, even though I prefer happy endings. Still, I think it ended as well as it could. And maybe I'm callous, but I don't believe she's going to pine for the married guy much--I'm sure she really loved him, etc, but it's not like there was any chance she'd end up with him anyways, so I imagine she'll move on without much moping. I have my guesses about who she ends up with, but I'll probably be proven wrong. We'll see. Also, I hate hate hate having to wait for the next book in the series to come out.
