I lied

I said I was going to shower, but instead, a quick "oh how much I loved it" for one of the books I read while traveling today (2.5 total, all of them really fabulous, if you must know, but this was the only non-chick lit)

I read Too Many Curses on the flight from Philly to Boston. It fit *perfectly* in that time (1:15), which was very nice of it because I would not have wanted to stop reading without finishing this book.

Remember when we all were talking about Mary Brown and The Unlikely Ones and how we loved it the first time we read it, but not the next two times? This is the...3rd? no, 4th I think book I've read by Lee Martinez, and I feel it is safe to say the next one he writes will bear no more resemblance to this one than any of the previous ones do (I do prefer the possibly-same universe he's used in the last three over the almost-real one in Gil's All Fright Diner.

THe Mary Brown reference up there was intentional: in some ways, this is very similar to The Unlikely Ones (as, come to think of it, was A Nameless Witch, his last one, which even had an actual physical quest.) But it's a little more right than The Unlikely Ones because even though it's a quest, and everyone wins and things will probably live happily ever after, they are not perfect. The stupid ugly crippled girl is not a beautiful princess: the determined kobold girl is still a determined kobold girl. BUt still--I finished this book loving it. And for the right reasons and the right messages, and oh my god, for the love of all that is good and right in this world, just read the damn book and stop making me have to talk about it. (seriously, why is to so much easier for me to mock books? I'm all like, "it's so good," and that's the sum total of my skills in explaining good books, but I can go on for pages about books that suck goats.)

(BAD Celia! Just went to check something on amazon, and this is apparently book 5 that I've read of his. The Automatic Detective, which I'd managed to completely forgot even though I read it and raved about it like, two months ago, may be slightly more favorite than this one, I guess, for its playing with tropes, but only slightly!)

Please, the next time I am trying to remember my favorite new books, someone remind me of these?

"I believe everyone until they give me reason not to. I prefer discovering someone is not worthy of my trust rather than assuming no one is."

Yep, that sounds about right.

(yesterday as I read it, I was like, "That's excellent, I should remember that." but I knew I'd forget it, so instead, I just remembered what page it was on. bless you, Amazon search inside.)
