Sep. 2nd, 2002 06:35 pmThis year wasn't as fun as last year. And I was a little leery of pointing it all out, cause like it's not scientific, it's just me remembering last year, and between clarion and nostalgia, it was possible I'd just convinced myself last year was more fun. Only I mentioned it to the two who had been there last year as well, and they agreed. Oh, it was more fun to be in the hotel than staying outside of town, and it was wonderful to meet people, heather and
melintur especially.
But the panels sucked. The writer's track was so pathetic I was about as qualified to present as the writers they had there. I thought about suggesting a workshop panel when I got back from clarion, and now I really wish I had. It wasn't so much as I thought they'd be interested in having me there, but for heaven's sake, they had Ann Crispin there, and she teaches the one they run. Wouldn't it just be logically something to think about offering? I sure thought so. But no, the only mention of the value of workshops was at the random panel that *wasn't* listed with the writing track, despite having *actual* writers on it--Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole, and Ann Crispin, as well as a guy who wrote scripts for Sliders for years, and is beginning to write his own stuff. *that's* a valuable panel, not with people who are exclusively small press pubbed, or strictly gaming/media tie-ins. Damn people. And the how not to get published session was positively scary. They said sim subs are okay. One guy told of basically blowing off Daw for a small press. Um, hello? How on earth would this be a good idea? I wanted to stand up and yell "don't listen to them, look at where they've been published." Ahh!
Things were so bad that the best panel I was at was three guys in the writing room last night at like 12:30 discussing movies with the mikes turned on. Boys and their toys. :) I'd stopped in to get water, and paused for a minute, because they were discussing Minority Report. And then we sat for a few minutes, and then we went and got the rest of the group to come down as well, and we put both the heathers on the panel too, one as the token everything, and the other as the token bimb--blonde. And it was a blast, and we heckled people walking by (a surprisingly large number, esp considering how late it was, and how totally out of the way it was.) And we were having a blast with Steve, Steve, and Not-Steve. Steve2 was hotter than heck, though Andrea preferred Not Steve. Heather preferred my Steve too, cause she was draping herself all over him. Such a tramp.
