Serious writer type thoughts
Jun. 26th, 2002 01:55 pmThe way I see lines in a story is that if the line stands out to people, it should be looked at. Even if, maybe especially if people like a line, it may still need to be removed, because it may be concentrating attention on it instead of on the story as a whole. Does this mean I'll pull lines that people like? Probably not. but if I get the same line being tagged for different reasons, I'm going to take another look at it and make sure that it standing out as a good line isn't as wrong as it standing out as a bad line.
As far as sentence length is concerned, I suppose I see the same problem with it. If people are being distracted by sentence length, then the story is missing its point. People should not be noticing that these *are* sentences to begin with, let alone how long they are.
